Syria had one of the most supporting and powerful healthcare system in the Middle East area. There were about 480 hospitals together with almost 1900 healthcare centers, served high quality medical services to Syrian people which were almost free of charge.
Pharmaceutical industries in Syria was also achieved great economic strength, covered 93% of local needs and were exported to more than 50 countries with international quality standards, which make Syria the second largest Arab country in the export of pharmaceuticals. More than 6000 pharmaceutical products were manufactured in 57 government and private companies, 90% of which were ISO certified for quality.

By 2011 and entering the country in the war the Medical sectors have declined significantly and were subjected to a lot of sabotage and damage and incurred a lot of losses. Direct damage and pillage of pharmaceutical industry from the war, as well as economic sanctions imposed on it, was a major cause of the decline of the pharmaceutical industry, which resulted in the spread of diseases, epidemics and immunization and had a negative impact on the Syrian citizen during the war. Approximately 55% of 480 well-equipped hospitals were damaged, 21% of them were discharged from service and 34% were partially damaged as a result of military attacks and theft of medical equipment. More than 700 people who used to work in the medical structures have been extinct since the beginning of the crisis.
